Selected neuropsychologic variables are reported in Table 6. Given the large number of possible dependent measures that could be analyzed from the different neuropsychologic tests, we chose several measures for analysis, a priori, based on the data reported by Berry et al. These measures included sustained visual attention (Ruff 2 & 7 Test), motor ability (Finger Thpping), cognitive processing (Digit Symbol), verbal memory (Selective Reminding), visual memory (Benton Visual Retention Test, Rey Complex Figure), and mood (SCL-90R, Positive Symptom Distress Index and Global Severity Index).
Mean levels of performance on these cognitive measures are shown in Table 6. Analyses of subjects’ sustained attentional ability on the 2 & 7 Ruff Test revealed the effects of treatment (F[3,21] = 9.21, p<0.001) on the total number of targets identified in a five-minute period. Posthoc analyses showed a significant improvement in attentional ability for nasal A main effect of treatment was also seen for Digit Symbol (F[3,21] = 4.31, p<0.02). These data revealed a significant effect of nasal CPAP in improving cognitive processing speed when compared to baseline (Scheffes test, p<0.02). buy prednisone
Analysis of verbal memory performance on the Selective Reminding Procedure showed nonsignificant treatment effects for both learning (long-term storage, p<0.25) and retrieval (consistent long-term retrieval, p<0.14) measures. Similarly, immediate visual memory as assessed by the Benton Visual Retention Test was unaffected by treatment. A suggestive significant effect of treatment was seen for the Rey Complex Figure.
