When the number of hypopneas was investigated, a main effect of treatment condition was also seen (F[3,21] = 8.18, p<0.001). Here, all forms of treatment resulted in fewer hypopneas compared to baseline (air, p<0.04; oxygen, p<0.01; nasal CPAP, p<0.01). When the AHI was investigated, a main effect of treatment was seen (F(3,21) = 5.84, p<0.01) suggesting that CPAP resulted in a lower mean AHI than air (p<0.05) or baseline (p<0.05). Oxygen saturation data also showed the effects of treatment. While the mean high Sa02 was not altered by treatment (F[3,21] = 2.10, p<0.15), analysis of the mean low Sa02 data showed a significant main effect for treatment (F[3,21] = 6.20, p<0.01). Posthoc comparisons showed oxygen to result in a higher mean low Sa02 than either air (p<0.05) or baseline (p<0.01) and was marginally better than CPAP (p = 0.10). Treatment effects were also seen for the number of 4 percent falls (F[3,21] = 12.22, p<0.001). Nasal CPAP resulted in fewer 4 percent falls when compared to air (p<0.01) or baseline (p<0.05), but was no different from oxygen, which also showed fewer means falls than either air (p<0.01) or baseline (p<0.05).
