Response hypoxia (Part 14)On the one hand, it is relatively easy to envision how a vigorous hypoxic response can be useful in an accidental hypoxic encounter occasioned by ascent or the misfortune of disease; but it is somewhat more difficult to account for the association of a low hypoxic response with prowess in endurance athletic events or with the extraordinary high-altitude tolerance of professional high-altitude species. There are, however, several possibilities. First, a low ventilatory response may entail both an economy of effort and a reduction of dyspnea, permitting greater athletic performance; but this would not readily account for the superior tolerance of hypoxia manifested by specialized altitude species. Alternatively, it may be that decreased ventilatory response reflects a broader hypoxic tolerance indicative of the ability of cells to use oxygen effectively at low tensions. In such individuals and species faced with hypoxia, there may be more effective energy production, fewer metabolic products arising from hypoxia-induced metabolic error, and better function (running, flying, navigation). Reduction in hypoxic metabolic error in cells of the carotid body might evoke a lesser hypoxic ventilatory response. Thus, the ventilatory response to hypoxia might be a marker of the ability to maintain aerobic function at low oxygen tensions, and thus might explain the link between this response and other rather different attributes.
